रथयात्रा की तैयारी काफी दिन पहले से शुरू हो जाती है। वैशाख मास में शुक्ल पक्ष की द्वितीया तिथि को रथ का विधिवत निर्माण प्रारम्भ होता है। इसमें 832 लकड़ी के टुकड़ों का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जगन्नाथ जी का रथ 16 मीटर, बलराम जी का 14 मीटर और सुभद्रा जी का रथ 13 मीटर ऊंचा तैयार किया जाता है। रथ निर्माण के बाद ज्येष्ठ मास की पूर्णिमा के दिन 108 घड़ों के जल से मूर्तियों के स्नान से महोत्सव प्रारम्भ होता है। ‘हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण, कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे। हरे राम हरे राम, राम राम हरे हरे' और ‘जगन्नाथ स्वामी नयन पथ गामी, नयन पथ गामी भव त्वमेव' का उद्घोष भक्तों को अद्भुत आनंद प्रदान करता है।
